BACKGROUND: Analysis of hair microscopic morphology is a simple and less invasive method to differentiate alopecia areata (AA) from other alopecic diseases. However, there is limited information on the distribution of the microscopic characteristics. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the microscopic morphological characteristics of pulled-out hair and their correlation with disease course in AA. METHODS: Morphological characteristics of pulled-out hair were classified into 5 categories: the presence of typical clubbing, surface undulation, tapering, breakage, and depigmentation in proximal hair shaft. Clinical course of AA was investigated through assessment of Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) score (initial score, maximal score and difference of them [ΔSALT]). RESULTS: Among 1,272 pulled-out hairs (n=179) obtained at initial visit, depigmentation (59.5%) was the most common, followed by loss of typical clubbing (57.2%) and surface undulation (55.2%). The percentage of loss of typical clubbing and proximal tapering was significantly higher in severe type of AA, younger age of onset and shorter disease duration. The ratio of typical clubbing (<50% vs. ≥50%) was associated with difference in maximal score and ΔSALT (p<0.05). Strong activity group (pulled-out hair ≥10, n=33) showed difference in clinical course (maximal score, ΔSALT) as well as distribution of microscopic features (loss of typical clubbing) compared with those in non-strong activity group. The ratio of typical clubbing significantly increased at follow-up than initially in strong activity group (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Microscopic hair morphology, especially loss of typical clubbing and proximal tapering, could be useful tool to predict the course of AA.

BACKGRUOUND: We aimed to identify the risk of incident depression according to cumulative exposure to a low-household income status in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: For this retrospective longitudinal population-based cohort study, we used Korean National Health Insurance Service data from 2002 to 2018. Risk of depression was assessed according to cumulative exposure to low-household income status (defined as Medical Aid registration) during the previous 5 years among adults (aged ≥20 years) with T2DM and without baseline depression who underwent health examinations from 2009 to 2012 (n=2,027,317). RESULTS: During an average 6.23 years of follow-up, 401,175 incident depression cases occurred. Advance in cumulative number of years registered for medical aid during the previous 5 years from baseline was associated with an increased risk of depression in a dose-dependent manner (hazard ratio [HR], 1.44 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.38 to 1.50]; HR, 1.40 [95% CI, 1.35 to 1.46]; HR, 1.42, [95% CI, 1.37 to 1.48]; HR, 1.46, [95% CI, 1.40 to 1.53]; HR, 1.69, [95% CI, 1.63 to 1.74] in groups with 1 to 5 exposed years, respectively). Insulin users exposed for 5 years to a low-household income state had the highest risk of depression among groups categorized by insulin use and duration of low-household income status. CONCLUSION: Cumulative duration of low-household income status, defined as medical aid registration, was associated with an increased risk of depression in a dose-response manner in individuals with T2DM.

BACKGROUND: Tetanus, a life-threatening infection, has become rare in the United States since introduction of tetanus toxoid-containing vaccines (TTCVs), recommended as a childhood series followed by decennial boosters beginning at age 11-12 years; vaccination uptake is high in children but suboptimal in adults. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of sero-immunity to tetanus among persons aged ≥6 years in the United States and to identify factors associated with tetanus sero-immunity. Understanding population protection against tetanus informs current and future vaccine recommendations. METHODS: Anti-tetanus toxoid antibody concentrations were measured for participants of the 2015-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) aged ≥6 years for whom surplus serum samples were available using a microsphere-based multiplex antibody capture assay. Prevalence of sero-immunity, defined as ≥0.10 IU/mL, was estimated overall and by demographic characteristics. Factors associated with tetanus sero-immunity were examined using multivariable regression. RESULTS: Overall, 93.8% of the US population aged ≥6 years had sero-protection against tetanus. Prevalence of sero-immunity was above 90% across racial/ethnic categories, sex, and poverty levels. By age, ≥ 90% had protective sero-immunity through age 69 years, but prevalence of sero-immunity declined thereafter, with 75.8% of those aged ≥80 years having protective sero-immunity. Older age (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR]: 0.89, 95% confidence interval [CI]: .85-.92) and being born outside the United States (aPR: 0.96, 95% CI: .93-.98) were significantly associated with lower prevalence of sero-immunity. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of the US population has vaccine-induced sero-immunity to tetanus, demonstrating the success of the vaccination program.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged in 2019 and caused the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic worldwide. As of September 2023, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases has reached over 770 million and caused nearly 7 million deaths. The World Health Organization assigned and informed the characterization of variants of concern (VOCs) to help control the COVID-19 pandemic through global monitoring of circulating viruses. Although many vaccines have been proposed, developing an effective vaccine against variants is still essential to reach the endemic stage of COVID-19. We designed five DNA vaccine candidates composed of the first isolated genotype and major SARS-CoV-2 strains from isolated Korean patients classified as VOCs, such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta. To evaluate the immunogenicity of each genotype via homologous and heterologous vaccination, mice were immunized twice within a 3-week interval, and the blood and spleen were collected 1 week after the final vaccination to analyze the immune responses. The group vaccinated with DNA vaccine candidates based on the S genotype and the Alpha and Beta variants elicited both humoral and cellular immune responses, with higher total IgG levels and neutralizing antibody responses than the other groups. In particular, the vaccine candidate based on the Alpha variant induced a highly diverse cytokine response. Additionally, we found that the group subjected to homologous vaccination with the S genotype and heterologous vaccination with S/Alpha induced high total IgG levels and a neutralization antibody response. Homologous vaccination with the S genotype and heterologous vaccination with S/Alpha and S/Beta significantly induced IFN-γ immune responses. The immunogenicity after homologous vaccination with S and Alpha and heterologous vaccination with the S/Alpha candidate was better than that of the other groups, indicating the potential for developing novel DNA vaccines against different SARS-CoV-2 variants.

BACKGROUND: The Center for Personalized Precision Medicine of Tuberculosis (cPMTb) was constructed to develop personalized pharmacotherapeutic systems for tuberculosis (TB). This study aimed to introduce the cPMTb cohort and compare the distinct characteristics of patients with TB, non-tuberculosis mycobacterium (NTM) infection, or latent TB infection (LTBI). We also determined the prevalence and specific traits of polymorphisms in N-acetyltransferase-2 (NAT2) and solute carrier organic anion transporter family member 1B1 (SLCO1B1) phenotypes using this prospective multinational cohort. METHODS: Until August 2021, 964, 167, and 95 patients with TB, NTM infection, and LTBI, respectively, were included. Clinical, laboratory, and radiographic data were collected. NAT2 and SLCO1B1 phenotypes were classified by genomic DNA analysis. RESULTS: Patients with TB were older, had lower body mass index (BMI), higher diabetes rate, and higher male proportion than patients with LTBI. Patients with NTM infection were older, had lower BMI, lower diabetes rate, higher previous TB history, and higher female proportion than patients with TB. Patients with TB had the lowest albumin levels, and the prevalence of the rapid, intermediate, and slow/ultra-slow acetylator phenotypes were 39.2%, 48.1%, and 12.7%, respectively. The prevalence of rapid, intermediate, and slow/ultra-slow acetylator phenotypes were 42.0%, 44.6%, and 13.3% for NTM infection, and 42.5%, 48.3%, and 9.1% for LTBI, respectively, which did not differ significantly from TB. The prevalence of the normal, intermediate, and lower transporter SLCO1B1 phenotypes in TB, NTM, and LTBI did not differ significantly; 74.9%, 22.7%, and 2.4% in TB; 72.0%, 26.1%, and 1.9% in NTM; and 80.7%, 19.3%, and 0% in LTBI, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding disease characteristics and identifying pharmacokinetic traits are fundamental steps in optimizing treatment. Further longitudinal data are required for personalized precision medicine. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study registered ClinicalTrials.gov NO. NCT05280886.

Introduction: This study aimed to determine the efficacy of combining plasma phosphorylated tau (p-tau)181, amyloid beta (Aß)42/Aß40, neurofilament light (NfL), and apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotypes for detecting positive amyloid positron emission tomography (PET), which is little known in the Asian population, in two independent cohorts. Methods: Biomarkers were measured using a single-molecule array (Simoa) in a cohort study (Asan). All participants underwent amyloid PET. Significant changes in the area under the curve (AUC) and Akaike Information Criterion values were considered to determine the best model. The generalizability of this model was tested using another cohort (KBASE-V). Results: In the Asan cohort, after adjusting for age and sex, p-tau181 (AUC = 0.854) or APOE ε4 status (AUC = 0.769) distinguished Aß status with high accuracy. Combining them or adding NfL and Aß42/40 improved model fitness. The best-fit model included the plasma p-tau181, APOE ε4, NfL and Aß42/40. The models established from the Asan cohort were tested in the KBASE-V cohort. Additionally, in the KBASE-V cohort, these three biomarker models had similar AUC in cognitively unimpaired (AUC = 0.768) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (AUC = 0.997) participants. Conclusions: Plasma p-tau181 showed a high performance in determining Aß-PET positivity. Adding plasma NfL and APOE ε4 status improved the model fit without significant improvement in AUC.

The brain houses vital hormonal regulatory structures such as the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, which may confer unique susceptibilities to critical illness-related corticosteroid insufficiency (CIRCI) in patients with neurological disorders. In addition, the frequent use of steroids for therapeutic purposes in various neurological conditions may lead to the development of steroid insufficiency. This abstract aims to highlight the significance of understanding these relationships in the context of patient care and management for physicians. Neurological disorders may predispose patients to CIRCI due to the role of the brain in hormonal regulation. Early recognition of CIRCI in the context of neurological diseases is essential to ensure prompt and appropriate intervention. Moreover, the frequent use of steroids for treating neurological conditions can contribute to the development of steroid insufficiency, further complicating the clinical picture. Physicians must be aware of these unique interactions and be prepared to evaluate and manage patients with CIRCI and steroid insufficiency in the context of neurological disorders. This includes timely diagnosis, appropriate steroid administration, and careful monitoring for potential adverse effects. A comprehensive understanding of the interplay between neurological disease, CIRCI, and steroid insufficiency is critical for optimizing patient care and outcomes in this complex patient population.

After anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL) was first described by Stain in 1985, there have been several histological variants of ALCL reported. There are classified histological subtypes of ALCL, such as lymphohistiocytic, small cell, Hodgkin-like, composite pattern, and other less common variants including neutrophil-rich ALCL. A 63-year-old male patient presented with erythematous exophytic mass on the left lower leg. In the past, his condition had been diagnosed as abdominal primary cutaneous ALCL (pcALCL), which recurred as systemic ALCL (sALCL) in the left bronchus. After treatment, he achieved complete remission. Histopathologic examination showed large-sized pleomorphic, anaplastic mitotic tumor cells, several neutrophils, and a few lymphocytes. Neutrophil-rich ALCL is a rare histological variant of ALCL. It is characterized by the presence of CD30-positive anaplastic tumor cells with numerous neutrophil infiltrations. Neutrophil-rich ALCL responds well to treatment but tends to recur. There were four cases reported to have recurrent neutrophil-rich ALCL. All cases were diagnosed with neutrophil-rich pcALCL prior to recurrence. Three cases had local recurrence, and only one case relapsed as sALCL. Herein, we present the first case of neutrophil-rich ALCL recurring as sALCL twice.

Transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS), in which acoustic energy is focused on a small region in the brain through the skull, is a non-invasive therapeutic method with high spatial resolution and depth penetration. Image-guided navigation has been widely utilized to visualize the location of acoustic focus in the cranial cavity. However, this system is often inaccurate because of the significant aberrations caused by the skull. Therefore, acoustic simulations using a numerical solver have been widely adopted to compensate for this inaccuracy. Although the simulation can predict the intracranial acoustic pressure field, real-time application during tFUS treatment is almost impossible due to the high computational cost. In this study, we propose a neural network-based real-time acoustic simulation framework and test its feasibility by implementing a simulation-guided navigation (SGN) system. Real-time acoustic simulation is performed using a 3D conditional generative adversarial network (3D-cGAN) model featuring residual blocks and multiple loss functions. This network was trained by the conventional numerical acoustic simulation program (i.e., k-Wave). The SGN system is then implemented by integrating real-time acoustic simulation with a conventional image-guided navigation system. The proposed system can provide simulation results with a frame rate of 5 Hz (i.e., about 0.2 s), including all processing times. In numerical validation (3D-cGAN vs. k-Wave), the average peak intracranial pressure error was 6.8 ± 5.5%, and the average acoustic focus position error was 5.3 ± 7.7 mm. In experimental validation using a skull phantom (3D-cGAN vs. actual measurement), the average peak intracranial pressure error was 4.5%, and the average acoustic focus position error was 6.6 mm. These results demonstrate that the SGN system can predict the intracranial acoustic field according to transducer placement in real-time.

Women undergo various physical changes because of hormonal changes occurring after menopause. Some representative changes caused by the reduction in estrogen levels in these women are dyslipidemia, abnormal lipoprotein levels, obesity, weight gain, and changes in body fat distribution. A characteristic of women approaching menopause is the shift of fat from their hips and thighs to their abdomen. Notably, fat accumulation is common in internal organs, resulting in male-pattern obesity among women approaching menopause; therefore, these women require more exercise therapy than premenopausal women to prevent and treat obesity. To the best of our knowledge, no effective exercise therapy guidelines have been established for postmenopausal women; therefore, I aimed to suggest more effective diet and exercise therapies for postmenopausal women with obesity. For this purpose, I organized the diet and exercise protocol by collaborating with an obstetrician and a researcher specializing in sports medicine; further, this protocol was actually applied to all participants. The results indicated that the protocol is effective in reducing weight; however, joint pain was commonly noted in participants who dropped out of the program. Based on the evaluation of joint pain, this study found that it is necessary to perform exercise therapy by avoiding weight-bearing activities and reinforcing personalized joint strengthening exercises because reduced estrogen level is an important factor exacerbating arthritis in postmenopausal women.

The effect of the channel interface of top-gate InGaZnO (IGZO) thin film transistors (TFTs) on the electrical properties caused by exposure to various wet chemicals such as deionized water, photoresist (PR), and strippers during the photolithography process was studied. Contrary to the good electrical characteristics of TFTs including a protective layer (PL) to avoid interface damage by wet chemical processes, TFTs without PL showed a conductive behavior with a negative threshold voltage shift, in which the ratio of Ga and Zn on the IGZO top surface reduced due to exposure to a stripper. In addition, the wet process in photolithography increased oxygen vacancy and oxygen impurity on the IGZO surface. The photo-patterning process increased donor-like defects in IGZO due to organic contamination on the IGZO surface by PR, making the TFT characteristics more conductive. The introduction of ozone (O3) annealing after photo-patterning and stripping of IGZO reduced the increased defect states on the surface of IGZO due to the wet process and effectively eliminated organic contamination by PR. In particular, by controlling surface oxygens on top of the IGZO surface excessively generated with O3 annealing using UV irradiation of 185 and 254 nm, IGZO TFTs with excellent current-voltage characteristics and reliability could be realized comparable to IGZO TFTs containing PL.

Top gate a-InGaZnO (IGZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) annealed at high temperature show excellent initial current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. However, when they are exposed to positive gate bias for a long time, hump can occur in the subthreshold region. This abnormal hump is accelerated at a higher positive gate voltage and mitigate by a negative gate voltage. While the strength of the hump is irrelevant to a change in channel width, it relies significantly on channel length. This phenomenon might be due to mobile Na ions diffused from a glass substrate migrating toward the back and edge side of the IGZO semiconductor by a vertical gate electric field. When a layer of Al2O3 is formed between the IGZO semiconductor and the glass substrate, the hump phenomenon could be successfully solved by serving as a barrier for Na ions moving into the IGZO.

We aimed to compare the risk of incident diabetes according to fatty liver disease (FLD) definition, focusing on the comparison between those who met criteria for either metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) but not the other. This was a 5.0-year (interquartile range, 2.4-8.2) retrospective longitudinal cohort study of 21,178 adults who underwent at least two serial health checkup examinations. The presence of hepatic steatosis was determined by abdominal ultrasonography at the first health examination. Cox proportional hazard analyses were used to compare the risk of incident diabetes among five groups. Incident diabetes cases occurred in 1296 participants (6.1%). When non-FLD without metabolic dysfunction (MD) group was set as a reference, the risk of incident diabetes increased in the order of NAFLD-only, non-FLD with MD, both FLD, and MAFLD-only groups. The presence of excessive alcohol consumption and/or hepatitis B virus (HBV)/hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, FLD, and MD synergistically increased the risk of incident diabetes. MAFLD-only group showed a greater increase in incidence of diabetes than non-FLD with MD and NAFLD-only groups. The interaction among excessive alcohol consumption, HBV/HCV infection, MD, and hepatic steatosis on the development of diabetes should not be overlooked.

Mannitol, derived from mannose sugar, is crucial in treating patients with elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). Its dehydrating properties at the cellular and tissue levels increase plasma osmotic pressure, which is studied for its potential to reduce ICP through osmotic diuresis. While clinical guidelines support mannitol use in these cases, the best approach for its application continues to be debated. Important aspects needing further investigation include: 1) bolus administration versus continuous infusion, 2) ICP-based dosing versus scheduled bolus, 3) identifying the optimal infusion rate, 4) determining the appropriate dosage, 5) establishing fluid replacement plans for urinary loss, and 6) selecting monitoring techniques and thresholds to assess effectiveness and ensure safety. Due to the lack of adequate high-quality prospective research data, a comprehensive review of recent studies and clinical trials is crucial. This assessment aims to bridge the knowledge gap, improve understanding of effective mannitol use in elevated ICP patients, and provide insights for future research. In conclusion, this review aspires to contribute to the ongoing discourse on mannitol application. By integrating the latest findings, this review will offer valuable insights into the function of mannitol in decreasing ICP, thereby informing better therapeutic approaches and enhancing patient outcomes.

BACKGRUOUND: We explored the risk of death from pneumonia according to cumulative duration in low household income state (LHIS) among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: Using Korean National Health Insurance Service data (2002 to 2018), the hazards of mortality from pneumonia were analyzed according to duration in LHIS (being registered to Medical Aid) during the 5 years before baseline (0, 1-4, and 5 years) among adults with T2DM who underwent health examinations between 2009 and 2012 (n=2,503,581). Hazards of outcomes were also compared in six groups categorized by insulin use and duration in LHIS. RESULTS: During a median 7.18 years, 12,245 deaths from pneumonia occurred. Individuals who had been exposed to LHIS had higher hazards of death from pneumonia in a dose-response manner (hazard ratio [HR], 1.726; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.568 to 1.899 and HR, 4.686; 95% CI, 3.948 to 5.562 in those exposed for 1-4 and 5 years, respectively) compared to the non-exposed reference. Insulin users exposed for 5 years to LHIS exhibited the highest outcome hazard among six groups categorized by insulin use and duration in LHIS. CONCLUSION: Among adults with T2DM, cumulative duration in LHIS may predict increased risks of mortality from pneumonia in a graded dose-response manner. Insulin users with the longest duration in LHIS might be the group most vulnerable to death from pneumonia among adults with T2DM.

RESUMO

The brain houses vital hormonal regulatory structures such as the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, which may confer unique susceptibilities to critical illness-related corticosteroid insufficiency (CIRCI) in patients with neurological disorders. In addition, the frequent use of steroids for therapeutic purposes in various neurological conditions may lead to the development of steroid insufficiency. This abstract aims to highlight the significance of understanding these relationships in the context of patient care and management for physicians. Neurological disorders may predispose patients to CIRCI due to the role of the brain in hormonal regulation. Early recognition of CIRCI in the context of neurological diseases is essential to ensure prompt and appropriate intervention. Moreover, the frequent use of steroids for treating neurological conditions can contribute to the development of steroid insufficiency, further complicating the clinical picture. Physicians must be aware of these unique interactions and be prepared to evaluate and manage patients with CIRCI and steroid insufficiency in the context of neurological disorders. This includes timely diagnosis, appropriate steroid administration, and careful monitoring for potential adverse effects. A comprehensive understanding of the interplay between neurological disease, CIRCI, and steroid insufficiency is critical for optimizing patient care and outcomes in this complex patient population.

Progesterone (P4) is required for the preparation of the endometrium for a successful pregnancy. P4 resistance is a leading cause of the pathogenesis of endometrial disorders like endometriosis, often leading to infertility; however, the underlying epigenetic cause remains unclear. Here we demonstrate that CFP1, a regulator of H3K4me3, is required for maintaining epigenetic landscapes of P4-progesterone receptor (PGR) signaling networks in the mouse uterus. Cfp1f/f;Pgr-Cre (Cfp1d/d) mice showed impaired P4 responses, leading to complete failure of embryo implantation. mRNA and chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing analyses showed that CFP1 regulates uterine mRNA profiles not only in H3K4me3-dependent but also in H3K4me3-independent manners. CFP1 directly regulates important P4 response genes, including Gata2, Sox17, and Ihh, which activate smoothened signaling pathway in the uterus. In a mouse model of endometriosis, Cfp1d/d ectopic lesions showed P4 resistance, which was rescued by a smoothened agonist. In human endometriosis, CFP1 was significantly downregulated, and expression levels between CFP1 and these P4 targets are positively related regardless of PGR levels. In brief, our study provides that CFP1 intervenes in the P4-epigenome-transcriptome networks for uterine receptivity for embryo implantation and the pathogenesis of endometriosis.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is common non-scarring hair loss disease. Sleep distrubance has been regarded as a triggering or aggravating factor for AA. However, objective evaluation of sleep disturbance and its clinical effect on AA has not been clearly demonstrated. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated objective sleep evaluation tool for AA patients and their clinical correlation. METHODS: Patients presenting with new-onset AA or recurrences of pre-existing AA were included, and those who reported sleep disturbance in the preliminary survey were designated as the sleep disturbance group (SD group). Sleep quality was investigated for them using three self-administered questionnaires: Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and Epworth Sleep Scale (ESS). Demographic information and clinical features of AA were analyzed according to sleep quality. RESULTS: A total of 400 participants were enrolled, and 53 were categorized into the SD group. The incidence of stressful events was significantly higher in the SD group (54.7%) than in the non-SD group (25.1%) (p<0.001). Based on the PSQI, 77.3% of participants were objective poor sleepers (score of 5 or more), and they showed a significantly higher incidence of stressful events compared to good sleepers (p=0.019). The proportion of poor sleepers was significantly lower in patients with mild AA (S1) than in those with moderate to severe AA (S2~S5) (p=0.045). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated a positive correlation among stress, SD, and AA. The degree of SD was objectively represented by the PSQI score, showing different scores according to AA severity.

Background: We aimed to develop integrative machine-learning models using quantitative computed tomography (CT) parameters in addition to initial clinical features to predict the respiratory outcomes of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods: This was a retrospective study involving 387 patients with COVID-19. Demographic, initial laboratory, and quantitative CT findings were used to develop predictive models of respiratory outcomes. High-attenuation area (HAA) (%) and consolidation (%) were defined as quantified percentages of the area with Hounsfield units between -600 and -250 and between -100 and 0, respectively. Respiratory outcomes were defined as the development of pneumonia, hypoxia, or respiratory failure. Multivariable logistic regression and random forest models were developed for each respiratory outcome. The performance of the logistic regression model was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The accuracy of the developed models was validated by 10-fold cross-validation. Results: A total of 195 (50.4%), 85 (22.0%), and 19 (4.9%) patients developed pneumonia, hypoxia, and respiratory failure, respectively. The mean patient age was 57.8 years, and 194 (50.1%) were female. In the multivariable analysis, vaccination status and levels of lactate dehydrogenase, C-reactive protein (CRP), and fibrinogen were independent predictors of pneumonia. The presence of hypertension, levels of lactate dehydrogenase and CRP, HAA (%), and consolidation (%) were selected as independent variables to predict hypoxia. For respiratory failure, the presence of diabetes, levels of aspartate aminotransferase, and CRP, and HAA (%) were selected. The AUCs of the prediction models for pneumonia, hypoxia, and respiratory failure were 0.904, 0.890, and 0.969, respectively. Using the feature selection in the random forest model, HAA (%) was ranked as one of the top 10 features predicting pneumonia and hypoxia and was first place for respiratory failure. The accuracies of the cross-validation of the random forest models using the top 10 features for pneumonia, hypoxia, and respiratory failure were 0.872, 0.878, and 0.945, respectively. Conclusions: Our prediction models that incorporated quantitative CT parameters into clinical and laboratory variables showed good performance with high accuracy.
